FAT-SCRAP MARCH 2010 DAY THIRTEEN

Hi and welcome back!

Treat - Something special that gives much pleasure.

Yesterday, we got to talking about treats and I thought I'd try and help you to think about treats in a different way. Above is the definition of "treat" according to Chambers Dictionary. So,here are some thoughts....
  • If you are going to treat yourself to something, make sure it that it really does give you pleasure. If you are going to feel guilty after the treat, is it really giving you pleasure?
  • Something special means something different to usual, so if you are going to treat yourself to something, is it special if you treat yourself to it every day?
  • Does a treat have to be based on food?
  • If you regularly treat yourself with foods that are not nutritious or not kind to you body, how are you treating yourself?
  • Why do we think it's ok to treat ourselves with a "naughty" food or say we have been naughty when usually a naughty behaivour doesn't get rewarded with treats!?
So, lets think about how we "treat" ourselves and how we can treat ourselves better.

Here are some of the ways I treat myself to treats
  • Going out for dinner because I am able to have my own choice and not have to think of everyone elses, I don't have to wash up, I sometimes get to try something new, I usually have something different to what I cook at home, I get to spend time with faimly and friends and sometimes it's a celebration.
  • Having reflexology, a massage or a manicure because I feel pampered and I am doing something that makes me feel good.
  • Taking some time out relaxing because I work hard and deserve some me time
  • Holidays because I get to spend more time with my family, I love being in the sun and I get to relax with a good book
  • My food choices for treats would be scallops, sea bass and fillet steak -  all because I love them but they are expensive!
  • Buying something new because I love having something new and fresh to wear, look at or use.
  • Having a day out because it usually invoves spending time with someone else and sometimes it can include some of the above!
  • And the biggest treat someone can give me is a hug or a kiss because it's very special and gives me the greatest pleasure!
How can you "treat" yourself differently?

Good morning girls!!
Beautiful sunshine to begin another fabulous day! I hope you have a great exercise session today and sorry I can't join you. Thursdays are special for me as it's my day off (though I am actually working later this afternoon!) and I get to indulge myself in yoga all day! Two classes and the chance in between to spend time with special friends who not only make me laugh and are a joy to be with but they inspire me too.

Anyway, my big news....I went a bit mad and did a step class last night! Those of you who know me will know I LOVE step but haven't done it since last autumn when I hurt my foot. I'm still waiting for the results of my xray but its been feeling not too bad this week (or at least not any worse!) so I thought...let's just go for it!!! To my great joy I feel fine today. My foot is a little sore but no more than it would have been anyway so I'm really pleased I did the class. I loved it, it felt SOOOOO good to be back. What's more I felt SO much lighter than when I last did it, no bloated tummy and my energy was so high I could have happily carried on for longer and was disappointed when the class ended. What a huge shift from last autumn when I literally dragged myself through the class each week.

You may be either laughing at me now or thinking I'm completely crackers!! Yes I LOVE exercise! But for those of you who are not so keen my advice is give everything a go until you find something that you really enjoy. There are so many things out there to try so don't see it as a chore just go for it! Personally I like group exercise best as I enjoy being with others and having a laugh in the process, I find that really motivating.

And if you ever want to give something a go but would rather not go alone the first few times and don't have anyone to go with - I'm your girl!! Just ask me as I'd love to join you!

Enjoy your days today and have fun!

Hi, hope Mara and Jayne had a good session with Sue today. Only a few more days to go and I'll be back!!! Be good to catch up, I wonder if my stamina will have reduced having this week off?

So pleased Apple you're back on your step class....I would say you're a weirdo LOVING exercise and step, but hey bet you never thought you'd hear me say this, but I've actually missed exercising this week!!!!! Do you think I'm finally falling for it too???? I can totally understand now how people can become addicted to it, mind you it does take a while to think of it as enjoyment and not hell!!!! or maybe that's just me!

You never know, I might take you up on that offer and join you in a class!!! Thank you!

As a treat today I had a manicure instead of a bar of chocolate or piece of cake.....totally satisfying! x

I agree with Apple, I love exercise, but nor every type of exercise..I'm very choosy about what I spend my time doing as it has to make me feel good. Unlike Apple, a step class is not for me..I always seem to be the wrong way around, and I get such a headache from trying to remember the steps, that I never seem to get the best out of the exercise..but walking, dancing, strength training, using the fitball, and now yoga..well they give me a buzz! And when it comes walking my dog everyday, I feel it is such a treat and that I am so lucky to be able to do this in the morning and not have to sit in a car driving to work.

That's great news about your foot though, Apple, maybe it will turn out to have been a strain and the rest has done it some good.

Pear, have really missed our sessions and your laughter...come back soon!!

Jayne and Mara..fantastic effort again..not sure if I want you both to get stronger now as you are already both throwing a heafty punch!!x x x

Hi girls!

Hope you are all having a good day. I have had a lovely chilled out one so far with all my yoga! Feel very energised and centred from doing it.

Yoga is definitely one of my 'treats' and as Sue says above about walking her dog, I feel so lucky and thankful that I have a job which means I can be flexible and get to as many classes as I can.

Other treats I like to have are meeting up with friends for a chat, spending time with my little boys, going for a walk in the sunshine and listening to music...even better if it's at the same time! Oh and I love giving hugs and kisses too so I'm with you Sue on that one! In fact giving anything which makes someone smile is a great treat in itself, for both heart and soul!

I have had the results of the xray on my foot and great news...no fractures!! I do wonder though what on earth the pain can be then?? And more importantly how can I make it better?

Hope you guys who exercised today had fun and I shall look forward to catching up with you next week. xx

Hey everyone

The exercise session was great today. I love the boxing and wondered about me using adrenaline when I am doing it which gives me a focus and high. I applied this thought when rowing and had far better results, accompanied by vocal whooping!!! Amazing. As Sue reminded us, if we think we don't want to do something or feel stressed about it we release cortisol the stress hormone-did you also know that when we apply willpower , we release adrenaline? If we release adrenaline without burning it off with exercise, that is toxic in the body? That's why a lot of diets don't work as the adrenaline builds up along with cortisol.
I was feeling quiet emotionally today wanting to withdraw. My exercise really lifted my mood and my afternoon meeting was great. I then took my woofers for a long walk , striding up the slopes that 2 weeks ago I would have been puffing up. Feels great to have my body starting to work with me again.
Hoping to see apple and pear on sat too.
Well done to us Mara today. Thanks exercise buddy. Have a great evening out tomorrow. I am looking forward to mine - and my scallops!!!
Food today
orange juice, porridge ( I love it) with yog soya milk and kiwi, seeds
2 oatcakes with peanut butter, 1 banana
carrot sticks and hummus, apple, apple juice
tomato and basil soup, gnocchi bake, made with with mixed roasted veg( the contents of veg box)hardboiled egg, chunky spicy chickpea sauce made from felafel mix and yogurt

I have a busy day tomorrow so may not blog- even food till Saturday. See you then

yogurt, yummy!!! (I made it up as I went along)

Just a quickie....what I am noticing is that us women all seem to love natural, healthy food, so why have we been so easily persuaded to eat otherwise..is it down to the power of advertising, seducing us into thinking that there is a better way? x x

To follow up on your comment Sue...yes I do think partly advertising is to blame. Who doesn't want to be like the sexy girl in the floaty dress painting in the rain whilst she eats a Flake? And who can't be lured by the soft music, warm fire and comfy sofa and want to be the gorgeous girl curling up with her bar of Galaxy? And that's just chocolate advertising!!

I do think too that we are all encouraged to lead such busy lives these days that we don't have the time nor energy to cook 'real' food anymore. Grabbing snacks and ready meals can easily become a way of life. And it's easy to be led to believe that the 'Lite' versions or 'Reduced Fat' meals are good for us, especially if they are branded as 'healthy' options. Only when you really take time to look at what is in them do you realise they are not that healthy after all! Or alternatively they are 'healthy' enough to fit in those guidelines but with a portion size barely large enough to fill a saucer, soon have you reaching for top ups of unsuitable accompaniments to make you feel full.

The other comment I have to make here is that we are a nation which has become totally obsessed with food and many 'dieters' get completely hooked on that obsession. I believe that is what keeps Weight Watchers and the like in business! We keep going and going until BOOM! we've had enough of the obsession. We console ourselves with poor food choices and roll out the excuses why we have given up on the latest greatest diet plan.

I read a disturbing statistic years ago which has always stayed with me..98% of people who go on a diet put the weight back on and the majority put on more. Hardly worth bothering then really is it?!! That's what is great about Fat Scrap - it's NOT a diet, it's a lifestyle change. So not just the food intake has to change but so much else besides.

We are ALL going to reach our goals, if we are committed to that change and focused on how we want to be. We WILL get there so let's all keep believing it and remember that each day is a step closer to our own personal goals.
